About Signs of Good Food

Hi! We're David Uzzell and Brienna Herold. Signs of Good Food is our creative project, where we merge sign language with good food—and whatever nerdy thing we happen to be obsessed with at the moment.

David is a chef with 10+ years of experience in fine dining. He cooked at the Obama White House, staged at Fäviken Magasinet in Sweden, and worked under José Andrés at minibar in Washington D.C. He also helped open and manage Mozzeria, Washington, D.C.'s first deaf-owned and deaf-run restaurant. His first chef, Robert Wiedmaier, said it plainly: "Being deaf hasn't stopped him from being a damn good chef."

Bri is a biologist turned engineer who has spent her career at the intersection of food and technology. She worked at the National Institutes of Health, the United Nations, and The New York Times. She now channels that experience into breaking down the science behind why David's techniques work, and building fun tools along the way, including this recipe website and the Global Deaf Restaurant Map.

We live in Minneapolis with our fussy cat, Winterfell. When we're not cooking or researching, we enjoy playing pinball, running long distances, and helping out on Bri's parents' farm.
